The difficulties of diagnosing amniotic fluid embolism: clinical case

Abstract

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but very serious complication of labour and the immediate postpartum period and remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality worldwide. Early detection of AFE is crucial for the survival of patients. The management of patients with AFE requires a multidisciplinary approach and the implementation of advanced diagnostic, intensive care and life support techniques to optimize outcomes for both mother and newborn. We present a case of AFE occurring during caesarean section in a 43-year-old woman with a large uterine myoma. The article demonstrates the key features of the initial management of patients with AFE, as well as long-term results.
