Obstetric risks and possible complications in patients with genital endometriosis

Abstract

The aim of this review was to investigate the endometriosis impact on pregnancy and to identify potential risks of obstetric complications associated with this disease. Data for this review were obtained from the evidence of PubMed database. The search related to all original articles published up to October 2024 and relevant enough for the inclusion in this review. The following keywords or word – phrases determined the seach: “endometriosis”, “complications”, “bleeding”, “placenta previa and accreta”, “spontaneous hemoperitoneum in pregnancy”, “preterm birth”, “spontaneous miscarriage”, “preeclampsia”.

Conclusion. The main outcome of our review is that endometriosis can be considered as an independent risk factor that increases the likelihood of numerous obstetric complications. Further studies are needed to investigate the interaction of endometriosis with various gestational complications, which will potentially expand the range of diagnostics, prognosis and prevention.

Keywords: endometriosis; pregnancy complications; bleeding; placenta previa and accreta; spontaneous hemoperitoneum; preterm labor; spontaneous miscarriage; preeclampsia
