Clinical and anamnestic predictors of rectocele in women of reproductive age

Abstract

Rectocele is a common condition that reduces quality of life for many women. Given the negative impact of this condition on the health and quality of life of the female population, studying risk factors is fundamentally important – both for early diagnosis of rectocele in patients from risk groups, and for choosing the optimal treatment strategy and preventing recurrences after surgery. Understanding the key predictors of rectocele development will identify the main mechanisms underlying this condition and develop effective prevention strategies.

The aim of the study was to identify clinical and anamnestic predictors of rectocele development in women of reproductive age.

Material and methods. The cohort retrospective open independent study included 96 women with rectocele [median age 40.58 years (Q1–Q3: 36.54–43.24)] and 30 women without it [median age 39 years (Q1–Q3: 37.30–40.99)]. Medical history, anthropometric data were collected, complex perineological and sonographic examinations were performed. Statistical analysis with odds ratio calculation was done.

Results. Significant (p<0.05) clinical and anamnestic predictors of rectocele development were: obesity and overweight (OR – 6.3), recurrent vaginitis (OR – 5.4), physically demanding work (OR – 4.6), multiple pregnancy (OR – 4.6), constipation (OR – 3.7), pelvic organ prolapse in family history (OR – 3.7), 3rd–4th degree perineal laceration during delivery (OR – 3.5), vacuum extraction of fetus (OR – 3.1), history of chronic cough (OR – 3.1).

Keywords:rectocele; predictors; obesity; chronic cough; constipation; traumatic birth; heredity
