The effectiveness of the combined medicine interferon alpha-2b + metronidazole + fluconazole in the treatment of vaginal infections

Abstract

The objective of the study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of the combined medicine interferon alpha-2b + metronidazole + fluconazole (Vagiferon) in the treatment of vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis and for the relapse prevention.

Material and methods. This study included 100 women aged 18 to 49 years with acute vaginitis and bacterial vaginosis accompanied by abnormal vaginal discharge. The patients received the medicine interferon alpha-2b + metronidazole + fluconazole intravaginally – one suppository in the evening (before bedtime) for 10 days.

Results. Clinical therapy effectiveness of the given medicine was 97%, microbiological one – 89%. Fast clinical effect (with considerable improvement already on the second-third treatment day) was achieved in 83% of patients. This result can be contributed to the combined medicine formulation, containing human recombinant interferon alpha-2b with strong immunomodulatory properties. No side or adverse effects have been observed during the use of the given medicine.

Conclusion. The combined medicine interferon alpha-2b + metronidazole + fluconazole is effective for the treatment of nonspecific vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis, candidiasis vaginitis, vaginitis caused by mixed infections (opportunistic bacteria, gardenerella, yeast-like fungi).
