Modern view of the health of infants born to mothers with diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) during pregnancy is associated with increased complications for the mother and fetus, as well as adverse long-term consequences for the newborn. Every year, the number of pregnant women with DM increases, which is associated with a feature of the modern lifestyle: high-calorie diet, low physical activity, often leading to obesity. Also, with an exponential increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes, improved diagnosis, the introduction of uniform criteria for screening of gestational diabetes mellitus. Maternal diabetes has a significant impact on the incidence of intrauterine, intranatal and neonatal complications. The risk of adverse outcomes is greater in pre-gestational diabetes, but undiagnosed and/or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can lead to similar consequences.
