Pelvic organ prolapse in XXI century

Abstract

The prevalence of pelvic organ prolapse (POP) does not decrease, 20-50% of women suffers from it. POP is not only one of the unsolved issues of gynecology, but it is also an economic problem. Taking into account the great attention paid to connective tissue dysplasia in combination with obstetric injuries of the perineum, one can say that unjustifiably little attention is paid to such risk factors as the biocenosis of the vagina, the structures of the pelvic floor's muscles. Biochemical and genetic markers of pelvic tissue, the impact of vaginal biocenosis on POP remain unknown. Due to the lack of complete understanding of the pathogenesis, there is no unified classification of POP, diagnostic criteria and effective treatment of the disease.

Keywords:genital prolapse, pelvic floor disorders, vaginal biocenosis
