Balloon tamponade of the uterus for postpartum hemorrhage
Abstract
Uterine atony is the most common cause of PPH in the world and one of the major causes of maternal mortality. However, there is a lack of data concerning the recommendations for the therapies of second line to be implemented for the treatment of uncontrolled PPH before recourse to the invasive surgeries. Despite the advantages of using misoprostol compared with oxytocin, the effectiveness of this drug in uncontrolled postpartum hemorrhage is low, and, therefore, it is not used as uterotonic therapy. The effective second line of treatments is uterine balloon tamponade (UBT). It has been suggested that the combination of this with misoprostol would be more effective for stopping postpartum hemorrhage compared with using only misoprostol. In this regard, a randomized trial was conducted to control the study in Benin and Mali. The results obtained do not prove the benefits of using UBT with misoprostol for the treatment of hypotonic bleeding. A Later appeal explains the increase in maternal mortality and women who received, including misoprostol and tamponade.
