Natural micronized progesterone in complex therapy of threatened preterm labor

Abstract

Natural micronized progesterone is an active ingredient of Iprogin, which is used in prevention of preterm birth in European countries for more than 20 years. In Russia, the drug has been registered since 2011. Efficiency and safety of supporting therapy with progesterone in case of threatened preterm labor and сervical weakness has been demonstrated in a large number of controlled clinical trials. The pharmaceutical form is easy to administer, softgel capsules can be used either per os or intravaginally also it can be used to prevent preterm labor. Metaanalyses of progesterone studies demonstrate its effectiveness in patients at high risk of preterm birth, including preterm birth rate, neonatal morbidity and mortality reduction.

Iprogin contains natural micronized progesterone which is identical to human endogenous progesterone. Progesterone in this drug is characterized by high bioavailability. Iprogin can be considered to be a drug of choice for prophylactic tocolysis and usage combined with adrenoceptor agonists and selective calcium channel blockers (Class II).

Further studies are needed for in-depth analysis of micronized progesterone preparations usage for prevention of preterm labor.
