Possibilities of sonoelastography in diagnosing of the breast diseases with microcalcifications of different origin

Abstract

The aim of the study was to estimate the potential and informative value of ultrasound sonoelastography (US SE) in diagnosing nonpalpable breast cancer and benign breast lesions with local microcalcifications, and also to work out a complex of methods for the most efficient diagnostics. 253 women with 290 breast lesions with microcalcifications of different origin were examined. The elastography data were compared with histopathologic findings (fine needle aspiration, core or surgical biopsy). In 201 cases surgical treatment was performed and 42 breast lesions were removed with vacuum-assisted aspiration biopsy. B-sonography gave 35,4% sensitivity, 74.7% specificity, 51,1% showed positive prognosis, 60,7% negative prognosis, 57,9% accuracy index. Sonoelastography gave additional information in 53 % US-positive breast cancers. Strain ratio (SR) index was higher than 4,3. A combination of B-sonography, sonoelastography and mammography had the best results in detecting early breast cancer.
