A new treatment option for uterine fibroids

Abstract

Objective. To optimize the management of patients with uterine myoma using ulipristal acetate (UA) for preoperative preparation.

Material and methods. 70 patients aged 3545 years old with symptomatic uterine myoma received UA for 13 weeks (n=30), agonists GnRH for 3 months (n=30) or had no preoperative preparation (n=10). All women had operative treatment.

Results. Uterine bleeding was rapidly controlled by UA. Approximately half of patients in UA group had amenorrhea after first 6 days of treatment. Furthermore, uterine bleeding was controlled significantly more rapidly in UA patients than in Buserelin acetate group.

Conclusion. UA 5 mg/day is more effective than Buserelin acetate as preoperative preparation in patients with symptomatic uterine myoma.
